Frequently Asked Questions About Solid Wood Flooring
What is Solid Wood Flooring?
Solid wood flooring is a type of flooring made from a single piece of natural wood. Each plank is milled from a single piece of hardwood, typically 18mm thick, although it can come in various thicknesses. This flooring is known for its durability, longevity, and timeless aesthetic appeal. Unlike engineered wood, solid wood is 100% natural hardwood throughout its entire thickness.
How Long Does Solid Wood Flooring Last?
Solid wood flooring can last for decades, often over 50 years, with proper care and maintenance. Because it's made from solid hardwood, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times throughout its life, typically 4 to 7 times depending on thickness, allowing you to refresh its appearance and repair surface damage without replacing the entire floor.
Can I Install Solid Wood Flooring Over Existing Flooring?
Solid wood flooring is typically installed over a wood subfloor for optimal stability. Installing over existing flooring like vinyl, laminate, or tile is not recommended and these materials should be removed to ensure a stable, level base. Proper subfloor preparation is essential for preventing movement, squeaking, and premature wear.
Do I Need Underlayment for Solid Wood Flooring?
Yes, a vapour barrier or rosin paper underlayment is recommended beneath solid wood flooring. This reduces moisture transfer from the subfloor, allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with seasonal humidity changes, and helps prevent cupping, warping, and gaps. Always follow manufacturer installation guidelines for your specific product.
What Rooms Are Suitable for Solid Wood Flooring?
Solid wood flooring is ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and home offices. It's not recommended for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or basements where moisture levels are consistently high. For kitchens, ensure proper sealing and prompt cleanup of spills to protect the wood from water damage.
How Do I Maintain Solid Wood Flooring?
Regular sweeping or vacuuming removes dirt and grit that can scratch the surface. Clean with a wood specific cleaner and damp (not wet) mop. Avoid excessive water, steam mops, and harsh chemicals. Use protective pads under furniture, area rugs in high traffic zones, and maintain consistent indoor humidity of 40 to 60% to prevent expansion and contraction issues.
